The 1912 Brevard County Courthouse was built on land donated by Colonel Titus, founder of Titusville. Because of the unusual size and dimensions of the county, court is convened today in several locations including the “new city” of Viera. The old courthouse represents the most significant historical public building in Titusville. It has undergone two extensive renovations since 1912. In 1925, in the midst of Titusville's first boom period, three large wings were added to provide office space at a cost of $80,000. Later, during the Space Center boom, more work was done.
The Henegar Center was born from the vision of a dedicated group of community leaders. As the deterioration of two historical buildings in downtown Melbourne became increasingly apparent, a small group formed the Brevard Regional Arts Group (BRAG) to revive the treasured landmarks. The buildings, formerly public schools, were donated by the Brevard County School System to BRAG for transformation into cultural arts facilities. The Henegar Center for the Arts was thus born, named for Ruth Henegar, beloved principal for whom the original middle school was named in 1963. At the heart of the Center is a 493 seat proscenium-style theater designed by a Tony Award-winning Broadway set designer. The stage features a main stage curtain from the original Broadway production of The King and I, with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems for the highest quality productions.
The Brevard County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to approve journalist Wenona Cleveland as it’s first County Historian. This honor is a well deserved and comes after years of faithful service to the community, as a writer of our history. Some of her article topics and titles include: the old Melbourne Beach Power Plant; Crossroad Towns Remembered : A Look back at Brevard and Indian River Pioneer Communities; histories of Melbourne and Eau Gallie and even old English sugar mills on Merritt Island. Congratulations to Ms. Cleveland on her achievements and we echo the Commissioners’ appreciation.
